ACEs and Trauma-Informed Care: A Comprehensive Guide for Professionals

Describe ACEs
Provide a definition of ACEs. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 that can have long-lasting effects on an individual’s health and well-being. These experiences are more common than often realized and can significantly impact future outcomes.
Describe implications for mental health. ACEs are strongly associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Understanding these connections is crucial for early intervention and support.

Describe implications for physical health. ACEs can lead to chronic physical health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. The stress from trauma can alter brain development and weaken the immune system.
Identify types of ACEs. ACEs include abuse (physical, emotional, sexual), neglect (physical, emotional), and household dysfunction (domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration).

Provide a link to a valid ACE screening tool. One widely used tool is the ACE Questionnaire, available through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or other reputable health organizations.

Trauma-Informed Care
Identify the intended audience. Tailor the infographic to the specific needs of the chosen audience, such as educators, social workers, or primary care providers.
Provide at least three strategies for working with children or youth who have experienced ACEs. For example, educators can create safe classroom environments, social workers can use trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and primary care providers can screen for ACEs during routine visits.
Select strategies specific to the intended audience. Ensure the strategies are practical, evidence-based, and aligned with the audience’s professional role.
